For Immediate Release:
SAVE THE DATE!

Aurora Picture Show in association with the Institute for Adaptive Reuse presents SUPERANNUATE, an ongoing investigation of all things pre-owned and second-hand by Christopher Wilcha and John Freyer.

SUPERANNUATE includes an evening screening of films and videos about, influenced or inspired by the second-hand on Friday, July 5th, 2002.  On Saturday, July 6th 2002 all are invited to participate in the first annual Aurora Picture Show All States Swap Meet Fundraiser.

SUPERANNUATE will be the culmination of a three-week feasibility study sponsored by the Institute for Adaptive Reuse to evaluate the immediate and long-term potential of second hand subsistence.  IAR-tists in residence Christopher Wilcha and John Freyer will depart from Brooklyn, NY on June, 22 2002.  They will acquire all of the items necessary to travel to Houston and conduct their reuse investigation from second-hand sources nationwide, including but not limited to military auctions, unclaimed luggage vendors, foreclosed land auctions, regional Want Ads, thrift stores, eBay, impounded vehicle outlets, second hand book stores and school district surplus clearances.

Subsequently, the IAR requires that Wilcha and Freyer sell the entire research inventory they’ve accumulated upon arrival in Houston (vehicle, computer, video cameras, clothes, etc).  Returning this material to the marketplace will then fund their return trip to Brooklyn, thereby completing the study.

Freyer and Wilcha will post daily research notes about their travel and acquisitions to the report pages of www.adaptivereuse.org

The IAR initiates detailed studies to identify, document and interpret second hand phenomena.  The IAR actively supports artists, scientists, and scholars whose primary research incorporates second hand processes and practices.  Please visit www.adaptivereuse.org for further information.

RESEARCHER -- JOHH FREYER

Born in Syracuse, New York, John Freyer is the fifth of seven children.  In November 2002, Bloomsbury will publish Freyer's book  All My Life For Sale, based on his on-line performance AllMyLifeForSale.com, a project in which he challenged the emerging commercial systems on the Internet by selling everything he owns to the highest bidder.  After which Freyer visited the new owners of his now second, third, and fourth hand objects and posted updates about each visit to his ongoing travelogue temporama.com.

RESEARCHER – CHRISTOPHER WILCHA

Born in Queens, New York, Christopher Wilcha looks nothing like his parents.  His most recent documentary, The Social History of the Mosh Pit, was broadcast on MTV in May 2002.  His award winning first person video diary The Target Shoots First was screened internationally and broadcast on Cinemax in 2001.  Wilcha is currently at work on a documentary for HBO about garage sale culture in the suburbs of northern New Jersey.
